22 Right Whale Calves Spotted This Season — The Most in 15 Years

They are among the rarest large animals on Earth. There are only about 380 of them left. And this season, for the first time in 15 years, researchers have identified **22 new North Atlantic right whale calves** — a number that scientists are cautiously, gratefully calling a turning point.

The calving season for North Atlantic right whales runs roughly from December through March each year, with mothers giving birth in warm shallow waters off the coasts of Georgia and Florida. By February 2026, aerial surveys and boat teams from the New England Aquarium, NOAA Fisheries, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) had confirmed 22 mother-calf pairs — the highest count since 2011.

**From the Edge of Extinction**

The North Atlantic right whale's story is one of the most heartbreaking in conservation history — and, carefully, one of the most hopeful.

Once numbering in the tens of thousands, right whales were hunted nearly to extinction by the 19th century (their name literally comes from whalers who called them the "right" whale to hunt — they floated when dead and swam slowly near shore). Commercial whaling was banned, but new threats emerged: entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with large ships.

By 2020, the population had crashed to just **358 individuals** — the lowest count in decades. An "Unusual Mortality Event" declared by NOAA in 2017 was still ongoing, with entanglement and vessel strikes continuing to kill and injure whales faster than they could reproduce.

The turnaround has been slow — painfully slow. But it has come.

The population now stands at approximately **380–384 individuals** — a modest but consistent increase over the past three years. And the 2025–2026 calving season, with its 22 new calves, is the clearest sign yet that the species is fighting back.

**What 22 Calves Means**

*'This is the most encouraging calving season we've seen in over a decade,'* researchers at the New England Aquarium noted. The number of reproductively active females — around 70 — has remained stable, and encouragingly, scientists have observed some females calving at shorter intervals than before, suggesting improved health and nutrition.

There's particular excitement about some "first-time mothers" — young females entering the breeding pool for the first time, meaning the surviving population includes enough healthy young adults to sustain reproduction.

Scientists emphasise that 22 calves, while extraordinary by recent standards, is still far below the approximately 50 new calves per year the species needs for a sustained recovery. The threats haven't disappeared: fishing gear entanglement remains the number-one killer, and vessel strikes continue to take lives.

But the trend is undeniably positive. *"We have reason for cautious optimism,"* NOAA biologists said in their seasonal update — careful, measured words that, from whale scientists, carry enormous weight.

**The Conservation Fight Behind the Numbers**

The slow improvement has come from years of coordinated effort. Canada and the United States have implemented speed restrictions in key habitats, mandatory reporting of entangled whales, and partnerships with the fishing industry to develop "ropeless" fishing gear that eliminates the lines whales swim into.

Aerial survey teams fly thousands of miles of ocean each winter to spot and identify individual whales by their unique callosity patterns. Photo-identification catalogues now span generations — researchers can name the mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers of this season's calves.

The whales have names. The mothers have histories. When a new calf is born, conservation teams around the world celebrate.

**The Bottom Line**

At 380 individuals, the North Atlantic right whale remains critically endangered. There are more giant pandas alive today than right whales. But after years of decline, the numbers are moving in the right direction — slowly, tentatively, but unmistakably.

Twenty-two new calves. Fifteen years of waiting for a number like that. And now, finally, it's here. 🐋
